Nominations posted for Industry Day ‘Battle’ races
ELORA, ON — Nominations are posted for Grand River Raceway’s 2020 signature races.
The 23rd annual Battle Of Waterloo and 12th annual Battle Of The Belles will be raced during the track’s 30th annual Industry Day Celebration, on Monday, August 3 at 12:30 p.m.
Elimination divisions will be raced on July 27, 2020.
The Battle Of Waterloo final (for ON-sired two-year-old pacing colts) will be contested for an estimated $240,000. The Battle Of The Belles (for ON-sired two-year-old pacing fillies) will be contested for an estimated $160,000.
Battle Of Waterloo nominees totaled 147 (two less than in 2019) and include the Sunshine Beach brother to Karma Seelster, winner of the 2019 Battle Of The Belles.
After her maiden win in the elimination rounds and gate-to-wire victory in the final, Karma Seelster rounded out her rookie campaign with $262,000 in earnings, winning in an Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold Series leg, finishing second in her Eternal Camnation leg and third in the OSS Super Final. She was a major factor in Seelster Farms topping the Ontario Breeders’ Awards in 2019.
Another notable nominee in the Battle Of Waterloo is Marlboro Seelster, the sale topper and all-time record setter at the 2019 London Select Yearling Sale, cashing out at $270,000 for Seelster Farms.
The Battle Of The Belles nominees totaled 123 (19 less than in 2019) and include The Kings Queen, a Sportswriter filly out of the inaugural Battle Of The Belles winner FBS Terror. The 2009 champ went on to win the OSS Super Final in her freshman campaign and banked $440,000 before her retirement to broodmare duty in 2011. The Kings Queen is her second filly and first Battle Of The Belles nominee.
While both races (including the eliminations and finals) will be contested at Grand River Raceway, the Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) will handle the stakes administration. As noted on the nomination forms, all payments must be made payable to, and sent to, WEG.
The first sustaining payment must be postmarked no later than March 15.
