Killer teams set for Zombie-Pitch Tournament

ELORA, ON — When the zombie apocalypse hits Grand River Raceway on Saturday morning, there will be 132 bloodthirsty ghouls. While many walkers in pop culture are depicted meeting their fate at the end of a baseball bat, in this case, the zombies will be the ones taking the swings.

Eleven teams will play in the track’s inaugural Zombie-Pitch Tournament on October 24. The one-day three-pitch event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

All players dressed as zombies will win prizes, with a grand prize valued at $50 for the most gruesome garb.

The tournament takes place in the track infield and features easy access to the tournament headquarters in the nearby Lighthouse Restaurant for team standings, plus food and drink.

In addition to a $600 grand prize, players are vying for a custom-made trophy crafted from a plastic composite and finished in gold, silver and bronze for the top three teams.

These masterful depictions of a severed arm and zombie hand clutching a ball were created by former Grand River Raceway employee, and Elora native, Emily Skoggard — a prosthetics and special effects make-up artist in the film and television industry.

The Zombie-Pitch teams are:

  • You’ve Alerted the Horde
    • Dead Heads Batting
    • Cujo’s Cubs
    • Beer Guts & Coconuts
    • The Meat Puppets
    • Monster Mashers
    • The Zigs
    • Ballzout
    • Scared Hitless
    • White Eagle Spawn
    • Grave Dodgers

There is no admission charge for spectators, and visitors are welcome to attend (at their own risk).

Please visit the track’s website for complete event details.
