Best Open House yet at Grand River Raceway

ELORA, ON — Grand River Raceway hosted its seventh annual backstretch Open House on May 24.

Attendance topped last year’s record. More than 350 people of all ages came for a rare glimpse of horse racing behind-the-scenes. Donations (in lieu of admission) at the door topped $300 for the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society (OSAS).

A full tour of the Open House stations included: a tour of the judges’ stand and announcer’s booth with track announcer Gary Guy; an interactive display created by Dr. Alison Moore comparing racehorses with human athletes; a tour of the paddock, testing areas, starting car and track maintenance vehicles; riders with Racing Under Saddle (RUS) Ontario; OSAS; and the unique opportunity to drive a racehorse.

Grand River Raceway extends its gratitude to the following horsepeople and other volunteers who graciously committed their time and horses to help with this event: the Hands On Horses Program (Stacey Reinsma and Brian Tropea of the Ontario Harness Horse Association), Murry Small, Briar George, Emma Christoforou, Alicia Martin, Tanya Martin, Stacey Currie, Joe Currie, Gregg McNair, Dr. Alison Moore, Anna Glide, Paula McGuire, John and Nancy Braid, Gary Guy, Chris Polifroni, Julie Walker and Anna Humphris (RUS Ontario), Jane Belore, Debi O’Brien Moran and Joanne Colville (OSAS).

The track is offering another Open House on June 20, when it joins 11 other local attractions in the provincial Doors Open program.

Grand River Raceway’s 2015 live racing season kicks off on June 1 at 6:30.
